With major charger manufacturers, including the automotive industry, committed to implementing the Qi v2.0 (Qi2) standard, Microchip Technology Inc. has released a Qi 2.0 dual-board wireless power transmitter reference design. The Qi2 reference design uses a single dsPIC33 digital signal controller (DSC) to provide efficient control to optimize performance. The Wireless Charging Alliance (WPC) recently released a new version of the Qi2 standard, the main feature of which is the introduction of the Magnetic Power Protocol (MPP), which supports magnetic alignment between transmitters and receivers. The DSC software architecture is flexible and supports both Qi 2.0 MPP and Extended Power Protocol (EPP) configurations through a single controller.
Using the Qi2 reference design helps minimize the risk for customers when certifying the final product, which must pass the Qi certification process. Thanks to the integration of multiple Microchip automotive certified components, the dual-board charger also meets automotive reliability and safety standards. Automotive-grade hardware and software solutions support automotive Open System Architecture (AUTOSAR®) and AUTOSAR Single-chip Abstraction Layer architecture (MCAL), functional safety, and more, making automotive integration easier. The integrated CryptoAuthentication™ IC provides sufficient security to meet the stringent authentication requirements of the Qi standard.
Joe Thomsen, vice president of Microchip's Digital Signal Controllers business unit, said: "The dual-board reference design provides automotive charger module manufacturers with the flexibility and programmability to optimize MPP power loss accounting (MPLA) and Q-based foreign object detection (Q-FOD) and minimize certification time. It can also be seamlessly integrated into the automotive environment. Automot-grade design and comprehensive hardware and software support help our customers optimize their end solutions and shorten their time-to-market."
As part of reference design, Microchip also offers design documentation and software designed to create an effortless design experience and achieve a one-time pass. The design includes the dsPIC33 DSC and TA100/TA010 Trust Anchor secure storage subsystem, which is supplied by Microchip, a manufacturer certified by the Wireless Charging Alliance (WPC). In addition, the design includes Microchip's ATA6563 CAN transceiver, MCP14700 gate driver, and MCP16331 and MCP1755 regulators.
