In 2022, with smart phones, autonomous vehicle and 5G wireless connectivity leading the embedded design market, Microchip's 8-bit PIC and AVR MCU series market share will continue to expand. In the past 50 years, the 8-bit MCU market has been growing steadily, and the annual sales volume of Microchip is equivalent to one in the Western Hemisphere. In order to support the continuous growth trend, Microchip Technology Inc announced the launch of five new product lines and more than 60 new independent devices, providing simple solutions to the most common problems for embedded designers.
Designers seeking innovative design are turning to new products of Microchip's PIC and AVR microcontroller series. These new products have powerful processing power and can easily communicate with other chips and analog peripherals. They can achieve super configuration without changing the printed circuit board (PCB) during construction. These devices combine ASIC like functions with simple development experience, expand the functions of traditional MCU, and allow them to be configured as intelligent peripheral chips. Intelligent peripherals similar to the software controlled operational amplifier, multi voltage input/output (MVIO) and analog to digital converter (ADCC) with calculation function in PIC16F171 series bring new value to applications that do not use traditional MCU.
Systems using different power supply voltage chips often need to span multiple voltage domains (for example, connect a 5V MCU to a 1.8V sensor). Such systems usually require level conversion hardware, which increases the cost. MVIO peripherals in Microchip's latest 8-bit MCU (including AVR DD series) allow a single port on the MCU to work in a voltage domain different from other parts of the MCU, so that no additional external components are required.
Some systems require a certain level of speed and response time, which is difficult to achieve with software based processing. The core independent peripherals (CIP) of Microchip PIC and AVR product series can use MPLAB ® The code configurator (MCC) is programmed to facilitate connection to form a hardware processing chain. This makes it possible to create custom peripherals, thereby eliminating the cycle time of software processing. For example, by configuring a super peripheral composed of pulse width modulator (PWM), SPI interface and configurable logic unit (CLC), you can easily control a WS2812 LED array that requires a unique timing to drive correctly.
With the continuous growth of the 8-bit PIC and AVR MCU device market, Microchip continues to respond to customers' long-term needs by adhering to the powerful basic functions in its product portfolio and support structure. PIC and AVR MCU are very easy to design, and their supporting network enables Microchip customers to shorten the time to realize benefits. The 8-bit MCU product portfolio is pin to pin compatible. When higher performance is required or customers want to maximize product supply and minimize the requirements for redesign, alternative PIC or AVR MCU can be selected.
Greg Robinson, Vice President of Marketing of Microchip 8-bit MCU Business Department, said: "PIC and AVR MCU are very popular, and their design can meet our customers' requirements for current and future applications. We have also established a strong supply chain for 8-bit PIC and AVR MCU, and most of them are produced in Microchip's own factories. This enables us to control the production process in a way that is unusual in the industry."
