Microchip released the new Qi 1.3 wireless charging reference design to accelerate the development of cars and consumer Qi transmitters

Microchip Technology Inc has launched a new Qi 1.3 wireless charging reference design to provide developers of wireless charging systems for automotive and consumer applications with the necessary tools and support to achieve seamless integration and certification of next-generation product designs.

     The Wireless Charging Consortium (WPC) recently released the Qi 1.3 specification, which requires identity authentication when the transmitter and receiver transmit power of no more than 15W to improve security. In order to meet the requirements of this specification, Microchip Technology Inc. today announced the launch of the new Qi   1.3 Wireless charging reference design provides necessary tools and support for developers of wireless charging systems for automotive and consumer applications to achieve seamless integration and certification of new generation product design.

 

     For wireless charging system developers who want to launch certified Qi 1.3 transmitters within a limited time, Microchip's three coil Qi 1.3 reference design provides a leading edge for product development. The reference design fully integrates the security storage subsystem software with the wireless power MCU, which is a flexible solution that can achieve customized topology and foreign object detection (FOD).

 


     As a formal member of the Wireless Charging Consortium (WPC), which sets global standards for wireless charging of mobile devices, Microchip provided professional advice in the drafting process of the recently released Qi 1.3 specification. Qi 1.3 is a major upgrade to Qi 1.2.4, which stipulates that hardware based identity authentication must be carried out between the transmitter and the receiving device to achieve power transmission of more than 5W. By complying with the new certification standards, designers can ensure that the mobile phone receiving 15W power receives the signal sent by a Qi certified transmitter to ensure safety.

 


     Joe Thomsen, vice president of Microchip's 16 bit single-chip business unit, said: "Wireless charging enables consumers to charge devices simply and conveniently, so the demand for these systems in the automotive and consumer fields is increasing. Microchip's Qi 1.3 reference design, tools and service support can help engineers meet the rapid development requirements, and make the new Qi 1.3 transmitter design easy to certify, thus speeding up the time to market and simplifying the certification of terminal products."

 


     The reference design scheme of Microchip wireless charging system includes all necessary elements: Qi controller, Qi application software, pre configured identity authentication controller, i.e. WPC approved secure storage subsystem, and encryption software library implemented on Qi controller. This reference design includes a complete schematic, bill of materials, software, and design guidelines. Microchip cooperates with Avnet to provide Qi reference design evaluation boards to compliance customers around the world.

 


     To support Qi 1.3 wireless charging solution, Microchip provides dsPIC33C series devices to run Qi application software and ECC608/TA100 secure storage subsystem. The latter is provided by Microchip as the WPC certified manufacturing certificate authority. As an overall system solution, the reference design also integrates MIC4605 and MCP14700 grid drivers, MCP16331 and MCP1725 regulators, MCP6C02 current detection devices, ATA6563 CAN transceivers and MCP9700 temperature sensors.
