Microchip releases a new Ethernet PHY, which supports multi branch bus architecture

Microchip Technology Inc launched a new solution LAN867x series 10BASE-T1S PHY to extend Ethernet connections to the very edge of industrial networks, simplifying architecture and reducing risks for designers.

     As digital networks increasingly connect machines, production line equipment and robots, intelligent manufacturing is improving automation efficiency. Operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT) networks, which are critical to the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), rely on Ethernet to achieve interoperability, speed up data transmission and ensure security. Microchip Technology Inc introduced a new solution, LAN867x series 10BASE-T1S PHY, which extends Ethernet connectivity to the very edge of industrial networks, simplifying architecture and reducing risk for designers.


     Microchip's new LAN867x Ethernet Physical Layer (PHY) transceiver is a high-performance, small size device that can connect with standard system equipment (including sensors and actuators), which previously required their own communication systems.


     With LAN867x devices, the full Ethernet infrastructure in OT and IT systems can be extended to the edge of the network. Microchip LAN867x devices eliminate the need for gateways, which were used to interconnect incompatible communication systems. A single pair of wires reduces the cost, while a multi branch bus structure reduces the need for expensive switches and enhances scalability. Multiple nodes can run on the same bus line with high data throughput.


     Microchip's LAN8670, LAN8671 and LAN8672 Ethernet PHY are the first products designed and verified according to the latest 10BASE-T1S single pair Ethernet standard released by IEEE in the industry. 10BASE-T1S solves the challenge of creating an all Ethernet architecture for industrial applications, such as process control, building automation and system integration using multiple interconnection technologies. This configuration realizes a multi branch (bus line) topology, reduces cables, and can be developed on a printed circuit board. There are at least 8 nodes, and the support range is not less than 25 meters.


     All Ethernet infrastructure simplifies the architecture by using common communication and security mechanisms to reduce the cost and risk of designing new systems. Other advantages of Ethernet include using the same protocol independent of the physical layer speed and operating within the established security infrastructure and ecosystem.


     Julien Michel, the project leader of Schneider Electric Interconnection System, said: "Microchip's 10Base-T1S technology provides advantages for our terminal to cloud integration, connecting products, control systems, software and services in a simpler and more economical way. This technology will help fully utilize our energy and resources, and promote the progress and sustainable development of all parties concerned."


     Matthias Kaestner, Vice President of Microchip Automotive Products, said: "For industrial system architects and designers, the interconnection of many different communication devices and technologies is often very difficult and error prone. The use of 10BASE-T1S Ethernet simplifies these interconnections, improves interoperability and speed, which is critical to the industrial environment."


     The LAN867x expands Microchip's product portfolio and overall system solutions for industrial applications, including single chip computers (MCU), microprocessors (MPU) and switches with Ethernet interfaces, as well as development tools, evaluation boards and support.
