Micron delivers the world's first mass-produced low-power chip for the high-end smartphone market

Micron Technology has announced that it has delivered the world's first mass-produced low-power DDR5 DRAM chip, which will first be included in the upcoming Mi 10 smartphone. As Xiaomi's memory technology partner, Micron's LPDDR5 DRAM chips will deliver lower power consumption and faster data read speeds to meet consumers' growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and 5G capabilities in smartphones.

     Micron Technology has announced that it has delivered the world's first mass-produced low-power DDR5 DRAM chip, which will first be included in the upcoming Mi 10 smartphone. As Xiaomi's memory technology partner, Micron's LPDDR5 DRAM chips will deliver lower power consumption and faster data read speeds to meet consumers' growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and 5G capabilities in smartphones.

 

     "Micron Technology's introduction of the industry's first low-power DDR5 DRAM chip for smartphones will accelerate the deployment of 5G and AI applications," said Dr. Raj Talluri, senior vice president and general manager of Micron's Mobile Products Group. "Our customers and partners demand next-generation memory solutions based on the latest processes for an unmatched power and performance experience to support 5G and AI system applications. Micron LPDDR5 DRAM provides them with this solution - with 50 percent faster data access and more than 20 percent lower power consumption compared to its predecessor."

 

     Mr. Chang Cheng, Vice President of Xiaomi Group, said: "We greatly value Micron's long-standing leadership and innovation in the memory field. The market-leading performance of Micron LPDDR5 DRAM memory brings lower power consumption to the Mi 10 smartphone, while also ensuring greater performance and stability.      Micron Technology's LPDDR5 DRAM chip will effectively address the demand for higher memory performance and lower power consumption in various markets such as automotive, client computers, and dedicated networking systems for 5G and AI applications. Compared to LPDDR4x memory, LPDDR5 can reduce power consumption by more than 20%.

 

     The widespread deployment of AI in a growing number of applications requires advanced in-memory solutions to ensure faster and more efficient data access. Micron Technology LPDDR5 provides the speed and capacity needed for AI engines built directly into mobile device processors. These processors rely on the excellent data transfer rates of Micron's built-in LPDDR5 memory to support machine learning capabilities.

 

     Micron Technology's next-generation LPDDR5 memory is designed to meet the demands of 5G networks that will be deployed worldwide in 2020. Micron LPDDR5 enables 5G smartphones to process data at transmission speeds of up to 6.4Gbps, which will play a key role in eliminating 5G data bottlenecks. This performance can also meet the needs of other emerging technologies, such as autonomous vehicle driving, because the memory subsystem with greater bandwidth can support real-time computing and data processing.

 

     Micron Technology currently ships LPDDR5 to customers in 6GB, 8GB, and 12GB memory capacities with data transfer rates of 5.5Gbps and 6.4Gbps. Micron Technology will also bring LPDDR5 memory to mid - to high-end smartphones in the first half of 2020 through the UFs-based Multi-chip Package (uMCP5). The LPDDR5 in a multi-chip package offers extended battery life and higher bandwidth to support high-performance image processing capabilities previously available only on flagship models.
