Molex introduces MediSpec Medical Plastic Circular (MPC) interconnect system

     Molex introduces the MediSpec Medical Plastic Circular (MPC) interconnect system, a cost-effective, customized, off-the-shelf interconnect with extremely high insertion and withdrawal times and low insertion and withdrawal forces at a fraction of the cost of competing turning contact systems. MediSpec MPC interconnect systems offer both superior performance and ease of use, combining proven, cost-effective technology to meet the stringent standards of users in the medical device sector.

     Jeff Gaumer, New Product Development Manager at Molex, explained, "The environment created by the recent healthcare reform law in the United States is pushing medical device manufacturers to reduce costs without sacrificing stability. The MediSpec MPC connector system addresses this bifurcated issue by providing a high performance and affordable alternative to the typical medical circular connector, a commercial product with a very high cost performance and a custom off-the-shelf design."

     This MPC system uses Molex's proven LFH  stamping contact system to help provide a reliable electrical interface for applications that require multiple inserts. This highly cost-effective system requires very low insertion and withdrawal forces and has a durability of up to 10,000 insertions. The simple push-pull contact mechanism is easy to use, even when wearing surgical gloves. In addition, an optional locking sleeve is available to ensure that the cable withdrawal force meets the requirements of ANSI/AAMI-EC53 specifications (> 90N); Without the use of a locking sleeve, the cable can achieve a pull force of 15 to 20 N.

     The contact interface of the plug and socket (pin area) is sealed before delivery to prevent flux from flowing into the contact area during the wire termination process and from flowing through the pin area when used in the field.

     Four diametrics are being developed to meet OEM requirements for a full range of medical device applications: D1(up to 8 contacts), D2(up to 17 contacts), D3(up to 35 contacts) and D4(up to 59 contacts). Four keying positions and six colors are also being developed. Molex offers a well-designed pin counting function for every diameter interface, enabling flexible contact use without wasting pins. In addition, seal options with IP64 protection are available to provide protection against splash standard requirements.

     Gaumer added: "The modular design of the MediSpec MPC connector system can withstand inserts for future applications. These include fiber optic, radio frequency, power, fluid and air couplings.
