NXP Semiconductors has introduced next-generation battery controller ics designed to optimize the performance and safety of battery management systems (BMS). NXP's MC33774 18-channel analog front-end device delivers cell measurement accuracy down to 0.8 mV and excellent cell equalizing force over a wide temperature range, supports the functional safety class ASIL-D, and is suitable for use in safety-critical high-voltage Li-ion batteries to fully tap available capacity.

Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in electric vehicles because of their high energy density per unit volume and weight, low self-discharge rate, low maintenance costs, and can withstand thousands of charge and discharge cycles. Batteries account for about 30 to 40 percent of the total cost of an electric vehicle. A typical 800V lithium-ion battery system consists of about 200 individual cells in series. During a multi-year life cycle, it is critical to accurately estimate the state of charge (SoC) of a battery pack at any given temperature and instant. The NXP MC33774 provides accurate battery measurements over the full life cycle from -40°C to +125°C for highly accurate range prediction.
