NXP Semiconductor announced the launch of the world's first microcontroller-based (MCU) offline face and expression recognition solution, intended to provide face recognition processing power for smart home, commercial and industrial devices. Based on NXP's latest crossover MCU family, i.MX RT106F, and running on the FreeRTOS operating system, this face recognition solution helps original equipment manufacturers (Oems) quickly, easily, and cost-effectively integrate face, expression, and emotion recognition capabilities into a wide range of iot products.
Based on NXP's OASIS face processing engine capabilities, the i.MX RT106F breaks new ground in terms of price and performance, using neural network algorithms to detect, recognize faces and prevent fraud without the need for cloud connectivity. Oems can now leverage NXP's proven hardware and software platforms to deliver advanced human machine interface (HMI) capabilities to personalize end-user experiences for smart appliances, thermostats, lighting systems, alarms, power tools and many other smart edge devices.
Denis Cabrol, Executive Director of iot Solutions at NXP, said: "Think of a toy that recognizes each family member and responds appropriately based on each other's facial expressions, or a smart appliance that intuitively adjusts Settings based on previous interactions with the user. Now, with NXP's low-cost total solution, all of this can be achieved. Developers are no longer limited to Linux-based systems that need to run on expensive multi-core application processors that require large flash and memory, complex power management circuits, and expensive multi-layer printed circuit boards."
The McU-based face recognition solution solves the problems required for low latency face and expression recognition and is suitable for a variety of existing applications with its ultra-small form factor. The complete platform includes production pre-certified hardware and software tools, as well as the OASIS face processing engine that is fully integrated with the RT106F. The camera and display driver are used to recognize the user's face and expression. The total solution reduces the need for developer expertise, supply chain and logistics management.
