New wireless soft wearable health monitor

     Researchers have created a wireless wearable health monitor built using stretchable electronics. The researchers believe that the new wearable sensor could allow comfortable, long-term monitoring of adults, infants, and small children without having to worry about skin damage or allergic reactions caused by traditional adhesive sensors. Conventional sensors often tear the delicate skin of children and the elderly when removed.

     The wearable sensor transmits electrocardiogram, heart rate, breathing rate and movement activity data to a smartphone or tablet within a range of 15 meters. The electronic portion of the sensor is mounted on a stretchable substrate and connected to a gold electrode having printed connectors that stretch as they are embedded in a medical film.

     The team says that retractable sensors are important for children because they are soft and fit the requirements. The team designed the sensor specifically for people who may be harmed by traditional displays and have sensitive skin. Another key feature of the new sensor is that it avoids the signal problems that arise from the movement of typical metal gel electrodes on the skin.

     The team says the wearable sensors are accurate enough to measure signals from people walking, running or climbing stairs. Because motion artifacts destroy signal quality, traditional electrodes are unable to monitor human data during activity. Since this sensor is wireless, it also means that there are no large leads attached to the user's chest.

     Comfort and freedom mean this sensor can be worn in more situations and can detect changes that may not be recognized. The entire display is 3 inches in diameter and is powered by a small rechargeable battery. Eventually, the team hopes to replace the battery with an external radio-frequency charging system.
