Nexperia announces an expanded family of discrete FET solutions

     Nexperia is once again showcasing product innovation at APEC, announcing the release of several new MOSFETs to further broaden its range of discrete switching solutions for a variety of applications across multiple end markets. The announcement includes 100 V application-specific MOSFETs (ASFETs) for PoE, eFuse and relay replacement products in a DFN2020 package with a 60 percent reduction in size, and a 40 V NextPowerS3 MOSFETs with improved electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).

     PoE switches typically have up to 48 ports, and each port requires two MOSFETs to provide protection. With up to 96 MOSFETs on a single PCB, the solution for miniaturizing device package sizes is extremely attractive. To this end, Nexperia has released the 100 V PoE ASFET in the 2 mm x 2 mm DFN2020 package, which takes up 60% less space compared to the previous version in the LFPAK33 package. A key function of these devices is to protect PoE ports by limiting inrush current while safely managing fault situations. In response, Nexperia has increased the safe Working area (SOA) of these devices by a factor of three, with only a very small increase in RDS(on). These ASFETs are also suitable for battery management, Wi-Fi hotspots, 5G picocellular and closed-circuit TV applications, and can replace mechanical relays in smart thermostats, among others.

     Emc-related issues caused by MOSFET switches typically only occur late in the product development cycle, and resolving them may incur additional R&D costs and delay market launch. Typical solutions include using more expensive MOSFETs with lower RDS(on) (to slow down the switching speed and absorb excessive voltage ringing) or installing an external capacitor buffer circuit, but this approach has the disadvantage of increasing the number of components. Nexperia has optimized its 40 V NextPowerS3 MOSFETs to provide similar EMC performance to what can be achieved with an external buffer circuit, while also providing greater efficiency. These MOSFETs are available in an LFPAK56 package for switching converters and motor controllers in a variety of applications.
