Nexperia has announced the first Open Technology Alliance compliant ESD protection diode for 10BASE-T1S automotive Ethernet applications. These diodes have a very low capacitance (0.4pF), meaning they can be used to protect 100BASE-T1 or 1000BASE-T1 applications with higher data rates in in-car networks, while still maintaining excellent signal integrity.
According to IEC 61000-4-2, these diodes provide single-line ESD protection solutions up to 18 kV, and can still achieve protection levels of up to 15 kV after 1,000 discharges in accordance with Open Technology Alliance standards. These devices cover a broad range of automotive circuit board network voltages, including 12 V commonly found in automobiles, 24 V in trucks and large commercial vehicles, and 48 V in hybrid and electric vehicles.
Alexander Benedix, Head of Nexperia's Protection and Filtering Product Group, said: "Nexperia is very proud to introduce the first diode to meet the strict Open Technology Alliance requirements for 10BASE-T1S automotive Ethernet applications. These diodes not only support backward compatibility with traditional standards such as LIN and CAN, but also support today's cutting-edge in-car networks and provide excellent signal integrity. This innovation highlights the company's strength in ESD protection and reflects our commitment to providing excellent products while helping customers simplify board design. By bridging the gap between today's and tomorrow's automotive technologies, we are helping our customers build smarter, more flexible and future-proof vehicles."
High-bandwidth 100BASE-T1 and 1000BASE-T1 automotive Ethernet are playing a key role in advancing automotive connectivity and electrification, but many traditional in-car applications still operate at low speeds and are still being implemented using older connectivity standards such as CAN and LIN. Connecting these legacy applications to higher speed automotive Ethernet leads to unnecessary complexity and cost increases, so adopting 10BASE-T1S as an alternative makes a lot of sense. This approach allows the speed needs of virtually every automotive application to be met through a single network architecture (Automotive Ethernet). Automotive subsystem manufacturers can now use a single ESD protection diode, such as PESD1ETH10L-Q or PESD1ETH10LS-Q, to protect all automotive Ethernet applications from the harmful effects of electrostatic discharge, enabling board design streamlining and supply chain optimization.
The Open Technology Alliance (Ethernet Only) is a non-profit organization of automakers, technology providers and suppliers working to establish Ethernet-based networking as the standard for in-car networking. The alliance was formed in 2011 to foster collaboration across the industry, support open access to specifications, and drive the development of automotive connectivity.
The PESD1ETH10L-Q is packaged in DFN1006-2 with a size of 1.0mm x 0.6mm x 0.48mm; The PESD1ETH10LS-Q comes in the DFN1006BD-2 package with a side wettable pad of 1.0 mm x 0.6 mm x 0.37 mm, and the design of the side wettable pad enables automatic optical inspection (AOI) in applications requiring greater welding reliability.
