Nexperia, a specialist in high-capacity production of fundamental semiconductor components, has responded to industry demand by defining a new set of MOSFET products to maximize performance. Application Specific FETs (ASFETs) use MOSFETs that provide optimized parameters for specific applications. By focusing on specific applications, significant improvements can be achieved.
Nexperia offers a family of ASFETs for battery isolation, motor control, hot swap, and Power over Ethernet (PoE) applications. The improvements that can be achieved by custom ASFETs vary from application to application, such as a 3 to 5 times increase in the secure work Area (SOA) for hot swappable applications; For motor applications, the maximum rated current can exceed 300 A.
Chris Boyce, Senior Director of Nexperia's Power MOSFET Business unit, commented: "As designers push performance boundaries, it is critical to understand how MOSFETs can be used in applications. An average MOSFET data book has over 100 parameters, but in each project, only a few parameters are usually important. However, as the application changes, so do the important parameters. At Nexperia, we determine the performance of every element of a product, including: core wafer technology, chip design, packaging, manufacturing, and test procedures. By putting the needs of a particular application at the center of our consideration, we can choose to optimize the most important parameters in a particular application, often at the expense of other, less relevant parameters. In essence, we combine proven MOSFET expertise with a broad understanding of the application, so we can tailor and deliver the best performance for a specific application or function."
The ASFET category will be further enhanced with a new automotive product line to be released soon, capable of providing guaranteed repeated avalanche resistance for driving inductive loads. Boyce adds: "We constantly seek to deepen our understanding of specific applications, often working hand in hand with our customers. By providing our talented engineers with detailed application requirements, we will open up new and exciting opportunities for innovation, with numerous ASFET technology advancements on the horizon."
