Nexperia has introduced the NPS3102A and NPS3102B Electronic Fuses (eFuses) as the latest components in its growing family of power devices. These electronic fuses have a low resistance of 17 mΩ and can handle high currents of 13.5 a. They are designed to protect downstream loads from excessive voltages and to protect the power supply from load failures and large inrush currents.
These EFUses are designed for 12V hot-swappable applications commonly used in data centers, including enterprise communications and storage devices such as solid state and hard disk drives, servers, Ethernet switches, and routers. In addition, they can be used to protect mobile communication infrastructure such as 5G radios and industrial automation devices such as programmable logic controllers (PLCS).
The NPS3102A and NPS3102B fuses have a wide input voltage range (up to 21 V) and incorporate low-resistance on-mode MOSFETs, thus reducing voltage drop and minimizing power loss. This capability improves operational efficiency beyond what can be achieved by similar competing devices in similar packaging. The current clamp limit can be modified in the 2-13.5A range by using a resistor at the ILIM pin. The resistor can also be used to measure load current in real time. Both devices are equipped with an integrated overvoltage clamp that limits the output voltage when there is an input overvoltage and provides short circuit protection in a response time of 2 μs.
In NPS3102A, the FET needs to be manually reset after a fault occurs. However, the NPS3102B has an automatic retry block that can safely attempt to re-enable the FET without any action by the user. In addition to quickly protecting the system from input and output overvoltages and large surge currents, the Nexperia eFuses are specifically designed to protect downstream loads from high-current fault situations due to their precise 10% current limiting accuracy. The NPS3102A and NPS3102B are packaged in DFN3030-10/SOT8037-1 lead-free plastic with dimensions of 3.0 x 3.0 x 0.75 mm.
