Nexperia introduces the first ESD protection device to support the USB4 standard

Nexperia introduces the PESD2V8R1BSF, the industry's first ESD protection device developed specifically for the USB4TM standard with industry-leading RF performance. The device enables very low capacitance (down to 0.1pF); Very low clamping voltage dynamic resistance as low as 0.1Ω) and very robust surge and ESD protection (up to 20A 8/20 µs). The PESD2V8R1BSF comes in an ultra-low inductance SOD962 package.

     Nexperia announced the introduction of the PESD2V8R1BSF, the industry's first ESD protection device developed specifically for the USB4TM standard with industry-leading RF performance. The new device uses Nexperia's TrEOS ESD and active thyristor (SCR) technology, which will be of particular interest to USB4TM and Thunderbolt interface design engineers. The device enables very low capacitance (down to 0.1pF); Very low clamping voltage dynamic resistance as low as 0.1Ω) and very robust surge and ESD protection (up to 20A 8/20 µs). The PESD2V8R1BSF comes in an ultra-low inductance SOD962 package.

 

     Stefan Seider, Nexperia Product Manager, commented: "To avoid signal integrity issues, the PESD2V8R1BSF ESD protection diode offers extremely low insertion loss and correspondingly low return loss, at -0.21 dB and -17.4 dB respectively at 10 GHz. The ESD protection device can meet the high voltage requirements of USB 3.2. This means that the device can be placed behind the USB Type-C® connector to protect the coupling capacitor while still being backward compatible with USB3.2."

 

     The TrEOS protection diode comes in a very compact and very reliable DSN0603-2 (SOD962) package. This widely-used 0603 form factor offers a number of advantages, including extremely low inductance, fast protection, and the ability to integrate into monolithic circuits without the need for wire welding, which reduces mechanical and thermal stress.
