ON Semiconductor introduces Bluetooth low power multi-sensor platform

On Semiconductor continues to enable the battery-free and maintenance-free Internet of Things (IoT) with the launch of the RSL10 multi-sensor platform powered only by solar cells. This complete solution supports the development of IoT sensors that use continuous solar capture to collect and transmit data via Bluetooth low power without the need for batteries or other non-renewable energy sources.

     On Semiconductor continues to enable the battery-free and maintenance-free Internet of Things (IoT) with the launch of the RSL10 multi-sensor platform powered only by solar cells. This complete solution supports the development of IoT sensors that use continuous solar capture to collect and transmit data via Bluetooth low power without the need for batteries or other non-renewable energy sources.

 

     The powerful combination of ultra-low power wireless communication, small form factor solar cells and low duty cycle sensing applications makes it possible to develop and configure completely maintenance-free IoT sensor nodes. The RSL10 solar Cell multi-sensor platform is enabled by the complete system-level package (SiP) solution RSL10 SIP, with the RSL10 radio, integrated antenna and all passive components.

 

     The platform combines RSL10 SIP, solar cells, and Bosch Sensortec's many low-power sensors, including the BME280 all-in-one environmental sensor (pressure, temperature, humidity) and the BMA400 ultra-low-power 3-axis accelerometer, enabling developers and manufacturers to create complete IoT nodes. Powered entirely by renewable energy or energy harvested from around the sensor.

 

     Dr. Peter Weigand, Vice President of Marketing at Bosch Sensortec, said: "Following the success of the RSL10 sensor development kit, we are delighted to be working with On Semiconductor again to develop a new cutting-edge sensor development platform powered entirely by solar energy. The BMA400 is the first truly ultra-low power accelerometer that does not compromise performance. The platform, combined with the BME280 integrated environment sensor, provides a comprehensive sensing solution for IoT applications such as climate control, intrusion detection and asset tracking."

 

     Wiren Perera, Head of IoT at ON Semiconductor, commented on the launch of the RSL10 solar cell multi-sensor platform: "To support the growth of IoT, manufacturers are actively investigating alternative energy sources to power their designs, helping to reduce environmental impact and reduce manufacturing and maintenance costs. We demonstrate that the solution built with the RSL10 Bluetooth Low Power radio not only enables the development of battery-free, maintenance-free smart sensors, but also helps manufacturers improve their designs."

 

     IoT sensors are increasingly being used with a duty cycle low enough to support intermittent communication, enabling the harvesting of renewable energy to get the energy needed to do the job. The energy efficiency of the RSL10 is enhanced by a highly efficient power management system and the platform's ultra-low power sensors. Applications are expected to include smart home and building automation such as HVAC control, window/door sensors and air quality monitoring. Other possible applications include asset tracking such as package opening/closing detection, impact monitoring, and temperature and humidity data logging.
