ON Semiconductor introduces a smart shooting camera platform that uses artificial intelligence (AI) for event-triggered imaging

     ON Semiconductor introduces the RSL10 Smart camera platform that combines cloud AI with ultra-low power image capture and recognition to enable a new generation of IoT endpoints.The RSL10 Smart Shooting Camera platform adds AI-based image recognition capabilities to ultra-low-power IoT endpoints such as surveillance cameras, restricted areas, factory automation, smart agriculture, and smart homes. A companion smartphone app provides a user interface to the platform and acts as a gateway for a cloud-based, AI-enabled object recognition service.

     The platform brings together several innovations from On Semiconductor, including the RSL10 SIP, which provides ultra-low power Bluetooth low power technology, and the ARX3A0 Mono 65° DFOV IAS module. The module is a compact prototype for the development of a compact camera with 360 frames per second (fps) black and white imaging based on the ARX3A0 CMOS image sensor. These technologies, complemented by advanced motion and environmental sensors as well as power and battery management, provide a complete solution that can be used to automatically capture images and identify objects within them.

     Developers use the RSL10 Smart shooting camera platform to create an endpoint that automatically sends images to the cloud for analysis when triggered by various elements such as time or environmental changes such as light or temperature. Similarly, the camera platform can operate in low-power mode while monitoring a specific part of its field of view and automatically taking an image when the scene content changes, then sending the image to the cloud for processing, using AI to determine the image content, and then taking action accordingly.

     The image data is transmitted to the cloud via a gateway with an RSL10 SIP Bluetooth low power connection. The low-power nature of the components used in the platform means that it can operate for long periods of time on power from a single main or auxiliary battery. The designer can configure the trigger using a companion application, also via Bluetooth low power.

     Typical applications may include adding smart cameras to wearable safety devices such as hard hats. In a business environment, smart cameras can be used to monitor the contents of a shopping cart to support automated checkout. In vehicles, smart cameras will be used to monitor occupants, such as children in the back seat, to warn of any safety issues. At home, smart cameras can scan items in cabinets to create shopping lists.
