
ON Semiconductor, driving energy efficient innovation, introduces the AR0234CS 2.3 megapixel CMOS image sensor with global shutter technology. This high-performance sensor is designed for a variety of applications, including machine vision cameras, augmented reality (AR)/ virtual reality (VR)/ mixed reality (MR) headsets, autonomous mobile robots (AMR) and barcode readers.
The AR0234CS captures 1080p video and single-frame images and can operate at up to 120 frames per second (fps). With its industry-leading shutter efficiency, the 2.3 megapixel sensor generates sharp images by minimizing frame-to-frame distortion in high-speed scenes and reducing motion artifacts encountered by other image sensors.
The innovative pixel architecture of the AR0234CS sensor provides the wide dynamic range required to support lighting conditions ranging from dark nights to bright sunlight. Low noise and improved low-light response make it suitable for applications across consumer, commercial and industrial Internet of Things (IoT), and its extended operating temperature range allows it to be deployed in challenging outdoor conditions.
Gianluca Colli, vice president and general manager of Industrial and Consumer Solutions at On Semiconductor's Intelligent Perception Division, said: "As more manufacturers adopt vision-based expert systems for automation, the need for high-quality image perception is increasing. This demand requires optimizing the size, performance and power consumption of image sensors. On Semiconductor was one of the first manufacturers to recognize this need and responded with the AR0234CS."
Other advanced features of the AR0234CS include programmable areas of interest with on-slice histograms, automatic exposure control and a 5 x 5 statistical engine, fully integrated strobe lighting control, flexible skip and skip modes, as well as horizontal and vertical mirroring, window opening and pixel merging.
Together with the AP1302 Image Signal Processor (ISP), the AR0234CS provides a comprehensive camera system that can be quickly designed and developed for rapid time-to-market. In addition, system designers have access to DevSuite software to evaluate sensor characteristics and functionality, configuration, and fine-tuning, and to provide off-the-shelf output that can be used for further image processing.
