OmniVision Technologies has unveiled its first 200-megapixel resolution image sensor with a pixel size of just 0.61 microns for high-end smartphones

    OmniVision Technologies has announced the OVB0B -- a 200-megapixel image sensor with a pixel size of just 0.61 microns for smartphone cameras. The OVB0B uses a unique 16-in-1 pixel combination to provide extremely high video and preview quality in 12.5 megapixel mode, especially in low-light environments. The OVB0B is the first 200 megapixel image sensor to offer 100% four-phase detection (QPD) technology for excellent autofocus performance.

     The OVB0B uses the industry's first 0.61um 16-pixel merging technology to capture 4K/2K video with 16x sensitivity. In low light environment, 12.5-megapixel performance (2.44 micron equivalent pixel size) is achieved. The on-chip pixel restoration algorithm supports 50 megapixel video shooting at 24 frames/SEC and 8K video shooting at 30 frames/SEC (1.22 micron equivalent performance). The OVB0B also supports triple exposure interleaved HDR video output at 12.5M resolution of 30 frames/SEC.

     Jeffrey Mathews, senior analyst at Strategy Analytics, said: "The new 200-megapixel image sensor for smartphone cameras promises to capture stunning detail in captured images. Mobile phone vendors are actively looking for enhanced cameras with high-resolution image sensors to differentiate their mobile products, and this image sensor will meet their needs. "We expect to deliver more than 40 million image sensors with over 100 megapixel resolution to smartphone vendors in 2022."
