OmniVision adds near-infrared capability to single-chip automotive CMOS image sensor products

     OmniVision Technologies, a leading independent supplier of CMOS CameraChip image sensors for high-volume applications, has added near-infrared (NIR) capabilities to its single-chip automotive CMOS image sensor portfolio, a significant proprietary technology improvement. With integrated NIR capabilities, OmniVision's automotive sensors are able to operate in dual mode and are equally effective in both day and night vision applications, eliminating the need for two separate solutions. Nir technology can significantly improve the performance of automotive safety applications, while enabling Oems and vehicle manufacturers to simplify system designs and reduce the overall system bill of materials.

     This new night vision capability was made possible through the development and successful application of a range of process improvement technologies. These process improvements increase the sensor's spectral sensitivity to 1050 nanometers (equivalent to near-infrared sensitivity). The increased sensitivity enables OmniVision sensors to detect objects in complete darkness with only a small number of very low-power light-emitting diodes (leds), while enabling car cameras to capture objects outside the range of vehicle headlights.

     Inayat Khajasha, Senior product Marketing Manager at OmniVision, commented: "By providing our customers with products that deliver high performance in both day and night vision applications, we have significantly increased the versatility of our sensors. "During the day, our sensors provide standard color images and automatically switch to black and white night vision as soon as the natural light decreases to a pre-set Lux level."

     The dual-mode night vision capabilities offered by OmniVision sensors are particularly effective in driver assistance and safety applications such as pedestrian, object and sign detection, and rear-view or backup camera applications. Image sensors are also being used in a growing number of automotive security applications, one example being the "black box" anti-theft camera system. Once movement is detected around or inside the vehicle, the system activates the recording. These sensors provide superior night vision with a single low-power LED, which allows the system to remain active even if the vehicle is not started for long periods of time. In addition, the low-power LED has a minimal impact on vehicle battery life.

     Khajasha added, "The automotive insurance industry is in part driving the development of multiple automotive safety applications that can effectively utilize night vision. Vehicles with these surveillance and video systems can enjoy lower premiums because they reduce the risk of theft, vandalism and other auto-related crimes."
