OmniVision Technologies has announced the OV2312, a single-camera automotive image sensor that can be used for multiple functions.      "The global automotive image sensor market is expected to see accelerated growth due to the increased demand for driver condition monitoring." Thilo Rausch, product marketing Manager at OmniVision, said: "At the same time, automotive designers are looking for the most cost-effective ways to meet consumer demand for applications such as video conferencing in the mainstream automotive sector. By providing dual-mode sensors that combine the visual capabilities of the human eye and the machine, we can help designers be able to address both needs with a single camera."

 

     The ability to capture RGB and IR images with a single Global shutter (GS) sensor reduces the number of cameras and the total system cost. The OV2312 enables these dual-mode cameras to achieve images without motion artifacts at high resolutions of 1600x1300, 60fps and 1280x720, 90fps. In addition, since this is the smallest 2MP GS sensor in its class and comes in a 7.2 x 6.1mm automotive chip grade package, the camera can be placed out of sight of the driver and passenger.

 

     In no visible light conditions, the OV2312 uses the 3.0 micron OmniPixel®3-GS architecture to deliver an industry-leading 14% near-infrared quantum efficiency at 940nm wavelengths, as well as excellent modulation transfer function (MTF). The sensor is not only capable of capturing the high-quality images needed for driver eye movements and eye tracking while running in single mode at 60fps, it can also reduce system power consumption and cost by using fewer IR leds. The sensor itself consumes only an industry-leading 190mW in general. This significantly reduces the amount of heat generated, further ensuring optimal sensor performance for internal cameras operating continuously in confined Spaces.

 

     To further ensure maximum DSM performance while minimizing power consumption, the OV2312 can be synchronized with the on/off pulses of the system's infrared light source. In addition, its array size of 1600x1300 pixels enables detection of the driver regardless of driver height, seat position or how the vehicle cockpit is designed.
