OmniVision introduces Global shutter image sensor for better optical performance

OmniVision, one of the world's leading digital imaging solutions, has announced a new global shutter image sensor: the OV7251-2B, which provides 99.96% of the ideal shutter efficiency for machine vision applications that need to capture objects in motion clearly to avoid inaccurate decisions.

     OmniVision, one of the world's leading digital imaging solutions, has announced the introduction of a new global shutter image sensor, the OV7251-2B, which provides 99.96% of the ideal shutter efficiency for machine vision applications that need to capture objects in motion clearly to avoid inaccurate decisions. In addition, these applications typically operate in difficult lighting conditions. The cost-effective OV7251-2B solves this challenge for shooting moving objects in machine vision applications by adding a new optical waveguide feature that improves the angular response of light capture, resulting in better system-level optical performance.

 

     The image sensor is suitable for a wide range of machine vision, iot, AR/VR, gaming, drones, barcoding, and Simultaneous Localization and mapping (SLAM) applications, where avoiding less subtle edge blurring or ghosting is critical when capturing objects in motion. For example, when AR/VR systems perform room mapping, the headset is usually in continuous motion, and clear capture is necessary for accurate user display. In addition, industrial machine vision applications need to accurately capture images of objects that are normally in motion to avoid costly errors.

 

     Devang Patel, senior marketing Manager for Security and emerging markets at OmniVision, said: "We have added to the widely deployed, previous generation Global shutter VGA sensor family, providing a higher level of shutter efficiency without the need for design changes. In addition, our new optical waveguide function improves the family's capture capability through better light limiting, resulting in higher system-level optical performance." The 3.0 micron OV7251-2B image sensor has a compact form factor and provides 640 pixels x 480 pixel resolution at 120 fps, and it also integrates a single-channel MIPI serial output interface.
