OmniVision introduces a 1.0-micron 64 megapixel image sensor in Large optical format

     OmniVision Technologies, a leading developer of advanced digital imaging solutions, announced the introduction of the OV64A image sensor, which offers 64 megapixel (MP) resolution, the largest pixel size in its class, with a thickness of 1.0 microns and a best-in-class optical format of 1/1.34 inch. Its large optics and high resolution provide excellent low-light performance for wide-format and ultra-wide-format main cameras in high-end smartphones.

     In addition, the OV64A features 3-exposure, 4-unit HDR, with on-chip combination and tone mapping, and a very fast frame rate that works together to eliminate moving artifacts and produce the best 64MP signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The sensor also offers staggered HDR timing options for 2 and 3 exposures, giving smartphone designers maximum flexibility to choose the best HDR method for a given scenario.

     "TSR estimates that 322 million 50MP or higher resolution image sensors will be shipped to smartphone manufacturers by 2021, providing a tremendous opportunity for OmniVision's growing 64MP portfolio," said Arun Jayaseelan, marketing manager at OmniVision. "Compared to our 0.8 micron 64MP image sensor, the OV64A's 1.0 micron pixel size increases sensitivity by more than 60%, resulting in optimal performance in low light conditions."

     PureCel built on OmniVision? Pluss-s stacked core technology, the OV64A integrated chip, 4-cell (4C) color filter array and hardware rearrangement Mosaic, which provides high-quality, 64MP Bayer output, or 8K video, in real time. In low light conditions, the sensor can output 16MP images with 4K2K video at 4x sensitivity using the near pixel merge function, resulting in low light performance equivalent to 2.0 microns for preview and video. In either case, the OV64A consistently captures the highest quality images and achieves 2x digital cropping scaling with 16MP resolution and fast mode switching.

     Output formats include 64MP at 15 frames per second (fps), 16MP at 4C split boxes at 60 fps and 4K2K video at 120 fps as well as additional pixels required for electronic image stabilization. The sensor also offers 8K video at 30 fps, 1080p at 240 fps and 720p at 480 fps. Other features include CPHY and DPHY interfaces, and 4C half-masked phase detection for fast autofocus support.
