OmniVision Technologies has announced the introduction of the OV48B, the first 0.8 micron 48 megapixel image sensor with 1/2 "optical size high-resolution. The product uses OmniVision's PureCel®Plus chip stacking technology to deliver best-in-class still image and video capture for mainstream and high-end smartphones. In addition, the OV48B offers a variety of features, such as a digital cropping zoom and CPHY interface, making it a universal sensor for all types of rear cameras in multi-camera configurations, including the main camera, wide-angle camera and telephoto camera.
"Consumers are demanding higher resolution for high-end and mainstream phones." Arun Jayaseelan, Senior Marketing Manager at OmniVision, said: "With its high resolution and top image quality, the OV48B is ideal for high-end and mainstream smartphones. The 0.8 micron pixel size makes it the smallest chip in the industry to offer 48 megapixel resolution while enabling 1/2 "optical format."
The OV48B integrates a 4-cell color filter array and a hardware re-mosaic algorithm to deliver high-quality 48 megapixel Bayer output in real time. In low light conditions, the sensor can output 12 MP images with four times the sensitivity using near-pixel merges. Under all conditions, the OV48B consistently captures the best quality images without motion blur, and is capable of digital cropping zoom with 12 MP resolution and fast mode switching. In addition, the OV48B is compatible with support for both CPHY and DPHY interfaces, making it ideal for dual - and triple-shot configurations.
The new sensor also features DPHY and CPHY MIPI interfaces, allowing for fast frame rates using fewer pins. In addition, the OV48B is equipped with 2x2 microlens phase detection autofocus (ML-PDAF) to improve accuracy, especially in low-light environments.
This product comes with multiple output formats, including 48 MP at 10 frames per second (fps), 12MP with 4-cell binning at 30 frames per second, 4K2K video at 60 frames per second, 1080p video at 240 frames per second, and 720p video at 480 frames per second. The solder pad position on the left and right side of the image sensor is combined with the industry's smallest 48 MP bare chip size, providing additional flexibility for smartphone camera module designers.
