OmniVision's new image sensor delivers high-quality video capture for smartphones

     OmniVision Technologies, an industry-leading developer of advanced digital imaging solutions, has announced the OV02K, a new video-centric 2.9-micron 1080P smartphone image sensor. The OV02K is based on OmniVision's PureCel Plus pixel technology, enabling backup cameras in multiple camera configurations to capture high-quality video even in low-light environments.

     According to TSR, the number of smartphones with two or three rear cameras will grow from 8% in 2017 to more than 20% in 2022, when the total smartphone market is expected to reach 5.5 billion units. The pixel size of the OV02K is relatively large, making it ideal for ultra-high quality video shooting even in less-than-ideal lighting conditions."

     This huge pixel size of 2.9 microns gives the OV02K higher sensitivity, very low noise, and makes the SNR10 less than 10 lux. The OV02K is available in 1/2.8" optical format with 1080p resolution and a frame rate of up to 120 frames per second (fps) for standard or slow-motion video shooting. The sensor also supports up to three interlaced timing exposures to ensure a high dynamic range image (HDR) and supports frame-to-frame dual conversion gain (DCG).
