Onsemi completes acquisition of SWIR Vision Systems to enhance its intelligent perception portfolio

     Onsemi announced that it has completed the acquisition of SWIR Vision Systems. SWIR Vision Systems is a leading provider of colloidal quantum dots (CQD) short-wave infrared (SWIR) technology that extends the spectral range of detectable light to see through objects and capture images that were previously impossible to capture. On's integration of this patented technology into its industry-leading CMOS sensors will significantly enhance the company's intelligent perception portfolio and pave the way for further growth in key markets such as industrial and automotive.

     CQD uses nanoparticles or crystals with unique optical and electronic properties that can be precisely tuned to absorb a wider range of wavelengths of light. This technology extends the visibility and detection range of the system from standard CMOS sensor wavelengths to SWIR wavelengths. To date, the application of SWIR technology has been limited by the high cost and manufacturing complexity of traditional indium gallium arsenide (InGAas) processes. With this acquisition, On Semiconductor will combine silicon-based CMOS sensors and manufacturing expertise with CQD technology to deliver highly integrated SWIR sensors at lower cost and higher production volumes. This will lead to more compact, cost-effective imaging systems with a wider spectrum that can be used in a wide range of commercial and industrial applications.

     These advanced SWIR sensors are able to see through high-density materials, gases, fabrics and plastics, which is important in many industries, especially in industrial applications such as surveillance systems, silicon inspection, machine vision imaging and food inspection. In the field of autonomous vehicle imaging, a higher spectral range will result in better visibility, enabling better vision even in harsh conditions such as extreme darkness, fog or winter glare.

     SWIR Vision Systems is now a wholly owned subsidiary of ON, and its highly skilled team will be integrated into the company's intelligent perception business group. The team will continue to operate in North Carolina. The acquisition is not expected to have a material impact on On's near-to-medium term financial outlook.
