Onsemi, a leader in smart power and intelligent perception technologies, announced the introduction of the 1200V SPM31 Smart Power Module (IPM) with a new field-cutoff 7th generation (FS7) insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) technology. Compared to other leading solutions on the market, the SPM31 IPM is more energy efficient, smaller in size, and more power dense, resulting in a lower overall system cost. Because these IPMs integrate optimized IGBTs for greater efficiency, they are ideal for three-phase variable frequency drive applications such as heat pumps, commercial heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, and industrial pumps and fans.
It is estimated that about 26% of global greenhouse gas emissions come from operating residential and commercial buildings, of which indirect emissions such as heating, cooling and building electricity account for about 18%[1]. As governments around the world work to meet their energy and climate commitments, more energy efficient and low-carbon solutions are becoming increasingly important.
The SPM31 IPM controls the power flow of variable frequency compressors and fans in heat pumps and air conditioning systems by adjusting the frequency and voltage of the three-phase motor supply to achieve excellent efficiency. For example, On's 25A SPM31 with FS7 technology has reduced power loss by up to 10% and increased power density by up to 9% compared to the previous generation. With the electrification trend and higher energy efficiency requirements, these modules enable manufacturers to dramatically improve heating and cooling system design while increasing energy efficiency. On's SPM31 IPM series uses FS7 technology for improved performance, high energy efficiency and lower energy consumption, further reducing harmful emissions worldwide.
These highly integrated modules include gate driver ics, multiple modular built-in protection features, and FS7 IGBTs for excellent thermal performance and support for a wide current range of 15A to 35A. The high power density of the SPM31 FS7 IGBT IPM makes it the ideal solution to save mounting space, improve performance expectations, and reduce development time.
