LiDAR (Laser Detection and Measurement) is an essential component of almost all driver assistance systems (except Tesla). Systems such as emergency braking and lane assistance in semi-autonomous or autonomous vehicles use LiDAR to calculate distance. Osram Opto Semiconductor today announced the launch of a new SPL DS90A_3 laser pulse laser diode, which provides more powerful and efficient pulsed laser diodes for LiDAR systems.
This is because LiDAR systems emit very short laser pulses. When a laser pulse hits an object or person, the laser is reflected back and captured by the detector. The very short time it takes for a laser pulse to hit an object or human body and be reflected back can be used to calculate the distance of the device to that object. Driver assistance or autonomous safety systems can then make decisions including whether the vehicle should brake, reduce speed, or bypass the person or object.
The new SPL DS90A_3 laser pulse laser diode from OSram Opto Semiconductor can provide more powerful and efficient pulsed laser diodes for LiDAR systems. An infrared laser beam emanating from its edge scans an area near the car at a specific Angle.
Combined with these scans, a high-resolution 3D map of the environment can be created. With this 3D map, the technology can respond quickly to any traffic situation.Osram Opto Semiconductors says the SPL DS90A_3 can operate at high current of up to 40 A and can reach a typical output power of 125 W. The laser is suitable for automotive applications and has the advantages of long life and high efficiency. At the same time, the compact appearance of the laser diode also enables flexible system design within the vehicle.
