Osram introduces a laser for cars to improve safety at night

     Osram has released its new PLPT9 450D_A01 laser. This second generation blue multi-mode laser diode can be used in automotive auxiliary high beams with a lighting distance of up to 600 meters, double that of previous LED solutions. At the same time, the PLPT9 450D_A01 laser is compact in size, which can further simplify the lighting system design while improving the safety of drivers at night.

     One of the most difficult times to drive a vehicle is at night. The low visibility caused by poor light leads to the narrow vision of the driver, the blind area becomes larger, coupled with the fatigue of the body or poor road conditions after 8 hours of work, various factors lead to the accident rate of night driving is much higher than that of the day. By using OSram PLPT9 450D_A01 laser as an auxiliary light source, the car high beam can illuminate a longer distance with a brightness far higher than that of traditional headlights, significantly reducing the visual pressure of drivers and improving their attention, effectively improving the safety of night driving.

     Dr. Walter Rothmund, Marketing Manager of the Automotive Applications Infrared/Laser/Sensors Division at OSram Opto Semiconductors in Germany, said: "The newly developed PLPT9 450D_A01 laser diode has the characteristics of high brightness and small size, which can further achieve the miniaturization of lamp design and manufacturing while ensuring the required light output."

     In terms of brightness, laser diodes have more advantages than leds. At A typical operating current of 2.2 A, the Blu-ray PLPT9 450D_A01 laser has a light output of 3.5 W and emits a blue wavelength of 447 nm. With the right optics, the PLPT9 450D_A01 can focus the laser on points only a few microns in diameter. This blue light is converted into the white light required for headlamp lighting applications by a special fluorescent converter, and its brightness can reach 600 cd/mm², which is three times the brightness of the LED light source (200 cd/mm²).

     The PLPT9 450D_A01 laser diode is suitable for automotive applications with a certified operating temperature range of -40 ° C to 120 ° C. Compared to the three-pin generation product, the TO90 package has only two pins, which is easier to connect and better heat dissipation. The laser is only 9 mm in diameter and less than 4.5 mm in height (the contact pin is not included in the calculation), allowing future headlights to be made smaller, thus bringing new design possibilities and higher performance to headlight applications.

     With the PLPT9 450D_A01 laser, OSram Opto Semiconductors has once again expanded its automotive portfolio. Developers are free to choose the most suitable LED or laser solution for their target application.
