With the release of 12 new products in the Ostar Projection Power family, OSram is the first to successfully exceed the 3,000 ANSI lumens mark for projectors using leds rather than traditional bulbs, further expanding the market for its LED light source projectors.
Projectors are becoming more and more popular in home entertainment systems, and users have higher expectations for projector products. In addition to higher resolution, colors are also getting richer, with higher contrast and brightness. The requirements for the light source depend on the ambient lighting conditions and the distance between the light source and the projector surface. With these 12 new products, Osram can offer three different power levels for RGB solutions for deep blue (440 nm), blue (456 nm), converted green (520 nm) and amber (614 nm).
At the lowest power level, two chips of the same color on each component provide projector brightness up to 1500 ANSI lumens. In a medium power class product, four chips of the same color on each component can achieve brightness up to 2500 ANSI lumens. In the highest power level products, six chips of the same color on each LED can achieve brightness of more than 3000 ANSI lumens. As a result, the Osram Ostar Projection Power family replaces the high-voltage discharge lamps previously used in projectors with 2000 ANSI lumens or more.
This leap in performance is due to improvements in chip and packaging technology. Osram researchers have fundamentally improved the individual LED chips so that they are electrically connected in series on a copper plate. The Osram Ostar Projection Power family facilitates the work of system designers by requiring lower operating currents, lower LED driver complexity, and simpler component contact compared to other products with the same power consumption. In addition, the LED can be coupled directly to the heat sink without additional isolation costs. The mechanical design of the new product is also largely the same as that of the previous generation, so it can be quickly and easily interchangeable with products in existing projector systems.
Wolfgang Schnabel, Product Manager for the Visualization and Lasers division of OSram Opto-Semiconductors, said: "With the Osram Ostar Projection Power family, we have successfully broken the 3,000 ANSI lumens barrier using LED technology, making it easy for customers to integrate new components at the required power levels into their system designs and replace traditional bulbs with state-of-the-art LED systems."
