Power Integrations introduces high efficiency LYTSwitch-6 LED driver ics based on gallium nitride technology

     Power Integrations introduces the newest member of the LYTSwitch™-6 family of secure isolated LED driver ics - the new LYT6078C for smart lighting applications. The new LYTSwitch-6 IC uses Power Integrations' PowiGaN™ Gallium nitride (GaN) technology, which showcases its efficiency and performance benefits in the company's new Design paradigm report (DER-920), released simultaneously.

     The Powigan-based LYT6078C IC integrates a 750V power switch to provide flicker-free output up to 90W, with other devices in the same family offering flicker-free output up to 110W. Including PFC-level and LYTSwitch-6 LED drivers, system efficiency exceeds 90%. The LYTSwitch-6 IC is packaged in a miniature InSOP-24 surface mount package with advanced thermal reentry system protection that reduces output power to limit device temperature in abnormal situations while still providing lighting output. The LYTSwitch-6 IC also uses Power Integrations' FluxLink™ communication technology to enable secondary side control without optocouplings and provides constant voltage and constant current control accuracy of better than ±3% across a variety of input voltages, loads, temperatures and production conditions. All LYTSwitch-6 ics provide fast dynamic response performance and easily support pulse width modulation (PWM) dimming.

     The performance benefits of the LYT6078C are fully demonstrated in the new design report (DER-920), which details the design of a two-stage dimmable LED ballast using a PFC boost stage plus an isolated flyback topology stage. The ballast uses LYTSwitch-6 series LYT6078C IC and Power Integrations HiperPFSTM-4 series PFS7624C PFC controllers. In the input voltage range of 220 to 277VAC, with a 48V LED string driven at 1350mA, the peak efficiency exceeds 91%. In standby mode, the system consumes less than 80mW, which gives engineers great flexibility when designing lighting controls, especially for applications that have dimming to a fully extinguished state.
