Power Integrations introduces the new HiperPFS-4 power factor correction IC

     Power Integrations, a well-known company in the field of energy-efficient power conversion for high voltage integrated circuits, introduces the HiperPFS-4 Power factor correction (PFC) controller IC with Qspeed™ Low Reverse Recovery charge (Qrr) boost diode. The combination delivers more than 98% full load efficiency for PCS, TVS and similar applications ranging from 75W to 400W.

     Edward Ong, Product Marketing Manager at Power Integrations, said: "The design using the HiperPFS-4 IC exhibits extremely high efficiency across the entire load range, with a no-load power consumption of only 36mW at 230VAC. The HiperPFS-4 product family is ideal not only for PC and TV applications, but also for battery chargers, power tools, industrial power supplies and LED lighting. The integrated active device in the HiperPFS-4 IC has a voltage rating of 600V, making it easy to meet the commonly used 80% derating specification."

     The HiperPFS-4 IC integrates a continuous on-mode (CCM) PFC control circuit, boost diode, and 600V MOSFETs in one device. By adding a boost diode, the installation of the heat sink is reduced, resulting in a simpler design and better temperature rise performance. Furthermore, the integration of the Qspeed diode into the IC minimizes the parasitic inductance of the wiring, thus providing greater reliability in the event of a surge in the AC input, and reduces the voltage spike at both ends of the power switch during the transient period by up to 50V. As a result, the integrated 600V MOSFETs can easily meet 80% derating requirements when powered by a 385VDC constant voltage bus.

     The HiperPFS-4 IC can achieve a power factor greater than 0.95 at more than 20% load. The Qspeed booster diode is optimized for continuous on-mode PFC operation with very low reverse recovery losses, and its performance is close to that of silicon carbide devices without the added cost.
