Qorvo introduces new intelligent power control solutions

     Qorvo has introduced a new intelligent power control solution, the Qorvo PAC5556 Power Application Controller (PAC), which significantly reduces the energy consumption, size, weight and noise of smart appliances, AC fans and compressors. This new mixed-signal system-level package (SiP) product not only reduces the bill of materials by 35 percent, but also improves the performance, reliability and energy efficiency of brushless direct current (BLDC) and permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) control applications.

     According to a recent report by IHS Markit, 89 million smart home appliances were shipped globally in 2018, accounting for about 16 percent of all large white goods shipments. Shipments of the global smart appliances market are expected to grow 74 percent to 155 million units in 2019, "said Blake Kozak, principal analyst for Smart Home and Security at IHS Markit.

     The Qorvo PAC5556 Power Application Controller  (PAC) offers extremely high power density in a compact 52-pin 10×10 QFN package. It features a 150 MHz Arm® Cortex-M4F high-performance digital processor and 128 kB flash memory, integrated with a 600V N-channel DC/DC step-down controller and signal conditioning components. This greatly reduces the bill of materials for high pressure systems that do not require isolation.

     The integrated power management provides all the necessary voltage rails for the system, including 12 V or 15 V gate drive power from a metal oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) or an insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT). There is also an efficient 5 V DC/DC buck converter to power other system peripherals.

     Larry Blackledge, general manager of Qorvo's Programmable Power Management business unit, said: "We continually optimize product design to improve performance and energy efficiency. The PAC5556 expands our highly optimized PAC device family to implement BLDC and PMSM programmable motor controllers and drivers in a single integrated package. This is a disruptive product that controls and drives the next generation of smart energy AC appliances, devices and devices."

     BLDC motors are widely used because of their maintenance-free, long service life, high power efficiency and low noise operation. The next generation of systems will shift from brushless DC motors to brushless DC motors, including smart appliances, HVAC systems, automotive, aerospace, defense, and medical devices.
