Qualcomm has unveiled a series of new WiFi chips that support WiFi 6 technology, which the company hopes will boost sales of its 5G chips. Qualcomm is the largest supplier of chips for mobile phones, but the company has been looking to expand into other areas as the global mobile phone market has stalled in recent years.

The SAN Diego-based technology company has been pushing into chips for cars, headphones, laptops and other devices, providing WiFi chips for devices such as "mesh" Wi-Fi routers made by Alphabet Inc's Google Inc, aiming to provide better overall network coverage for homes. In addition, Qualcomm is also working with mobile phone manufacturers such as Samsung Electronics to provide next-generation wireless data network 5G chips for mobile phones.

With the new WiFi series of chips, Qualcomm hopes to one day combine its two major business lines. The difference between WiFi 6, which is expected to be fully rolled out as the new standard in 2022, and 5G is that the two technologies are designed to work more closely together, allowing WiFi routers to more seamlessly switch networks between phones and other devices that use both technologies.

In addition, 4G technology is mainly owned by telecom companies, and 5G technology will allow enterprises to build their own unique 5G networks to better connect large campuses, factories, and other areas that are difficult to reach WiFi networks.Cristiano Amon, Qualcomm's president and head of its chip division, said the company hopes to one day sell chips using both technologies to manufacturers of business networking equipment.
