ROHM introduces the ultra-small infrared LED CSL1501RW for VR/MR/AR eye tracking applications

     ROHM has developed a side-lit (side-looking) ultra-small infrared LED "CSL1501RW", which is ideal for games consoles equipped with VR/MR/AR*1 (virtual reality, etc. Collectively referred to as "xR"), headsets and head-mounted displays in the industrial sector.

     In recent years, VR/MR/AR, which emerged with the development of Internet of Things technology, has been applied in headsets and head-mounted displays, and is rapidly gaining popularity with its application in the field of game consoles. In addition, in the industrial sector, due to its increasing popularity for 3D spatial simulation and data projection in real space, the application market utilizing VR/MR/AR is expected to further expand in the future.

     At the same time, the functions of various application products are also constantly updated, not only the acceleration sensors that have been commonly used to detect human movement, but also the infrared leds that have been used to achieve eye-tracking functions.

     ROHM has been expanding its ultra-small patch LED "PICOLED™ Series *2" for small mobile devices and wearable devices, which has accumulated a strong market performance, and the new side-emitting ultra-small infrared LED is also to meet the current demand.

     The "CSL1501RW" is an infrared (peak wavelength 860nm) LED with a smaller size (1.0mm × 0.55mm, t=0.5mm, industry ultra-small class) and can emit side-to-side light relative to the mounting surface, thus providing greater design flexibility for application products. In addition, product development takes full advantage of ROHM's component manufacturing process to improve luminous efficiency and reduce power consumption by more than 20% compared to previous products, making it ideal for eye tracking light sources requiring improved performance in VR/MR/AR applications.
