Renesas Electronics and Qualcomm accelerate the application of wireless charging in mainstream smartphones

     Renesas Electronics has expanded its partnership with Qualcomm, a leading provider of wireless technology, to provide 30W wireless charging for mid-range smartphones powered by the latest Qualcomm SnapdragonTM 780G 5G mobile platform. This is the second collaboration between the two companies for reference designs for high-power wirelessly charging smartphones. The first collaborative solution designed for the flagship model is now commercially tested. This collaboration is an important step by two global companies, Renesas and Qualcomm, to extend highly integrated advanced wireless charging as a standard feature of 5G smartphones from flagship models to mainstream models.

     Qualcomm 5G Mobile Reference Design offers turnkey solutions designed to help smartphone Oems achieve low-cost wireless fast charging in flagship and mid-range models, with multiple programmable (MTP) and OTA update capabilities to simplify software development and Qi certification processes. Renesas solutions provide a high level of integration with an end-to-end system efficiency of more than 85%, helping to extend the reach of wireless charging technology to a broader customer base and simplifying the process of adding wireless charging capabilities.

     The Renesas P9412 wireless power receiver is the industry's first 30W power receiver with a high voltage integrated capacitor divider, which is more energy efficient than traditional solutions and 40% smaller in size, freeing up PCB space for customers to add additional features. For a safe and fast charging experience, a custom high-power protocol is embedded in the device firmware, enabling the system to verify power transfers beyond the 15W defined by the WPC EPP standard. Renesas WattshareTM technology also enables mobile devices to act as power sources for reverse wireless charging of accessories in the ecosystem, such as headphones and smartwatches.
