Renesas Electronics announces the 32-bit RX72T series of MCUS

Renesas Electronics Corporation announced the introduction of the 32-bit motor control microcontroller (MCU) RX72T series, equipped with a dedicated hardware accelerator IP to perform the complex, high-speed calculations required for motor control in robotics and other industrial equipment. The RX72T family delivers superior performance, earning a high score of 1160 CoreMark in the EEMBC® benchmark - the highest level for a 5V MCU operating at 200 MHz.

The RX72T family delivers superior performance, earning a high score of 1160 CoreMark in the EEMBC® benchmark - the highest level for a 5V MCU operating at 200 MHz.

The new product expands the easy migration path for the RX family of products and also creates new possibilities for extremely low-cost design in compact industrial robots.      With the increasing application of servo systems, the demand for compact industrial robots is also increasing. In order to achieve the complex movements required by industrial robots, it is necessary to control the position, direction, speed and torque of the motor with high precision.The RX72T MCU contains dedicated accelerator hardware to perform the high-speed position and speed control calculations required for servo motor control in compact industrial robots. The current control loop operation can be completed in less than 1.5μs (Note 2), which gives users the option to independently develop servo systems, whereas previously only off-the-shelf servos could be purchased.

 

     The calculation in the software can take a long time; However, a completely hardware-based approach has an impact on flexibility, making it difficult for users to implement specific control operations. The RX72T MCU solves this problem in hardware only by executing single-precision floating-point trigonometric functions (sin, cos, arctan, hypot) and using the register bank save function as a dedicated IP, which ensures flexibility and improves operation speed. In addition, the register saving function improves the speed and precision of interrupt processing and the computing performance of the device. The family of MCUS also includes a 200 MHz PWM inverter control timer for up to 4 channels of 3-phase control, 2 channels of 5-phase control, or 10 channels of single-phase control.

 

     Customers using Renesas e-AI fault detection solutions can use them with the new RX72T MCUS to increase productivity. With a single MCU, the characteristic data (current and speed values) that characterize the motor state can be used directly for motor control and E-AI-based fault detection. The MCU also has hardware-based system fault protection and hardware encryption module for encryption/decryption of communication data.Renesas offers sensorless vector control and encoder vector control programs, as well as Renesas Motor Workbench 2.0 for real-time debugging and RX72T CPU card supporting the 24 V motor control evaluation suite.

 

     With this new RX72T MCU family, Renesas Electronics offers system manufacturers a range of 5V motor control MCUS with the highest software compatibility. Enables a smooth migration path from the new high-end MCUS to RX23T (40 MHz), RX24T (80 MHz) and RX66T (160 MHz) MCUS and provides design flexibility in the RX MCU environment. The RX72T family is also fully compatible with the RX66T family containing the RXv3 kernel.
