Renesas Electronics has introduced four RZ/G2 series 64-bit MPUs

Renesas Electronics Corporation announced the launch of the second generation of its RZ/G series of microprocessors (MPUs), the RZG2 series MPUs based on 64-bit Arm® Cortex-A57 and Cortex-A53 cores for industrial and building automation applications. The four new RZ/G2 series MPUs are powered by Renesas Electronics' RZ/G Linux Platform for industrial applications, delivering improved performance, reliability, security and long-term software support for mission-critical and standard applications with high quality requirements.

These applications require higher performance, comprehensive integrated interfaces, improved reliability and long-term software support, which is exactly what the RZ/G2 series MPUs provide."

The RZ/G2 series of MPUs integrates a high-performance 64-bit MPU, a full set of integrated interfaces, internal and external memory error checking and correction (ECC) protection, and a fully verified Linux software package (VLP). The package contains the Civil Infrastructure Platform (CIP) Ultra-Long Term Support (SLTS) Linux kernel, which is bundled with the software development environment to combine internal and external security and reliability between software and hardware. The RZ/G2 series MPUs are the first embedded MPUs on the market to provide support for the 64-bit Linux kernel for more than 10 years.

The main features of the RZ/G2 series MPU
Improve performance for industrial applications:
●  The RZ/G2 family of MPUs is built on the 64-bit Arm Cortex A57 and Cortex-A53 64-bit cores and offers more processing power - up to 2.7x CPU performance improvements - than the previously announced RZ/G1 product group

●  The RZ/G2 series MPU delivers 36% better performance than any other embedded 64-bit MPU on the market

●  Support for the latest external memory high-speed protocols, including LPDDR4 or DDR3L, up to 3200 MT/s

●  Supports high-speed communication with USB 3.0, SATA and PCI-e high-speed interfaces, as well as QSPI and eMMC gigabit interfaces

● On-chip 3D graphics engine with 4K resolution H.264 and H.265 codecs, HDMI, LVDS and MIPI-CSI2 camera input interfaces; Graphics and video capabilities enable high-end human machine interface (HMI) applications

High reliability and safety:
●  ECC function can be used as a response measure to solve the soft failure sensitivity (Note 1), to realize the detection and correction of memory errors; The probability of such soft failures often increases with smaller semiconductor process sizes

●  The RZ/G2 series MPUs are the only embedded MPUs that provide ECC error correction on all internal and external storage interfaces of all devices in the product group

●  ECC can be used with on-chip L1/L2 cache memory and external DDR3L or LPDDR4 memory

●  ECC improves the reliability of industrial equipment by helping to eliminate the risk of failure due to data corruption in memory

Super Long term support:
●  The SLTS Linux kernel provides more than 10 years of support and security to maintain Linux-based embedded systems, enabling users to reduce Linux maintenance costs and easily adopt reliable, industrial-grade Linux

●  Complete VLP and verification test software includes Graphical user interface (GUI) framework with support for HTML5 and Qt, 3D graphics, H.264/H.265 video, and security features

●  VLP and test software make it easy for users to develop human machine interface (HMI) and networking capabilities, while enabling manufacturers to bring industrial devices to market quickly and with rich graphical display capabilities similar to those available on mobile devices
