Renesas Electronics Group, a global provider of semiconductor solutions, has announced the expansion of its RX functional safety solution with an application software suite based on EtherCAT's Functional Safety (FSoE), the first software product from a semiconductor manufacturer to support functional safety on EtherCAT. Renesas' RX functional safety solution for industrial automation applications reduces the complexity of certification to the international standard for functional safety, IEC 61508 SIL3.
Renesas' new FSoE software is based on the FSoE standard published by EtherCAT Technology Group, the world's largest industrial Ethernet organization. In addition to RX microcontrollers (MCUS) with functional safety support and FSoE slave station application software, developers receive the FSoE protocol stack to accelerate the development of industrial equipment that adopts FSoE. The suite quickly implements communication functions needed to support functional safety, such as hazard or emergency stop signal alarm indications using an RX MCU.
"As the smart factory continues to evolve, there is a growing need for autonomous machine-to-machine (M2M) communications, robust communication bus systems that support secure deployment via industrial Ethernet, and redundant system designs that ensure safety and reliability," said Sakae ITO, vice president, iot Platform Business Division, Renesas Electronics. "With early software support for FSoE, the industrial Ethernet standard, I am confident Renesas will accelerate the development of functional safety products to meet customer needs."
In addition to previous MCUS built on RXv1 and RXv2 kernels, RX functional safety support is now extended to all MCUS built on RXv3 kernels (e.g. RX72M, RX72N, RX72T, RX66N, and RX66T). With certified software, users do not need to develop McU-specific functional safety software, and can only focus on software development for their own applications. RX MCU users can also reuse their existing software assets when developing devices that support functional safety, significantly reducing overall development time.
