Renesas Electronics announced the launch of a new automotive class Intelligent power device (IPD) that provides safe and flexible control of power distribution within the vehicle to meet the requirements of a new generation of E/E (Electrical/electronic) architecture. The new RAJ2810024H12HPD comes in a small To-252-7 package, which reduces the installation area by about 40% compared TO traditional TO-263 package products.

Renesas announced the launch of a new automotive Smart Power device (IPD) that safely and flexibly controls power distribution within the vehicle to meet the requirements of a new generation of E/E (Electrical/electronic) architecture. The new RAJ2810024H12HPD comes in a small To-252-7 package, which reduces the installation area by about 40% compared TO traditional TO-263 package products.

In addition, the advanced current detection function of the new device enables high precision detection of abnormal current such as overcurrent. Because the new IPD can detect abnormal currents even at low loads, it allows engineers to design highly safe and accurate power control systems that can detect even the smallest anomalies.

Because the new IPD can detect abnormal currents even at low loads, it allows engineers to design highly safe and accurate power control systems that can detect even the smallest anomalies.

"We are very excited to introduce the next generation of IPDs for vehicles using Renesas's all-new power MOSFET process," said Hiroshi Dadori, Vice President of Renesas Electronics Automotive Simulation Applications Specific Business Unit. Renesas will continue to work on IPDs, improve the safety and reliability of power systems, and build system-level solutions with our microcontrollers to drive user system development."

As E/E architecture continues to evolve, new IPDs have been introduced to meet the growing market demand. In the traditional distributed E/E architecture, electrical energy from the battery is distributed to the various electronic control units (ECUs) via long, thick wiring harnesses through an electrical box consisting of mechanical relays and fuses. Compared to mechanical relays, IPDs last longer and are maintention-free, so they can be placed anywhere in the vehicle. As the automotive industry moves toward centralized or zoned E/E architectures, IPDs are becoming ideal for building efficient, flexible power networks due to their use of shorter, thinner wiring harnesses. As a result, Renesas IPD devices specifically provide a more efficient, safer, and smaller solution for distribution control.

Key features of new IPD (RAJ2810024H12HPD)

● Single-channel high-end IPDs

● Small TO-252-7 package (6.10mm x 6.50mm: pins not included)

● Low on-resistance (Ron) at 25°C: 2.3mΩ (typical value)

● Under the condition of low load to achieve high precision current detection

● Built-in charge pump

● Self-diagnostic feedback for load current measurement

● Load short circuit, overheating detection, sensing current output, and GND open circuit protection and other protection functions

● Support 3.3V/5V logical interface

Low standby current

● With self-starting function of the battery reverse connection protection

● Comply with AEC-Q100 and RoHS automobile standards

"Electronic fuse distribution box" solution

Renesas introduces "Electronic Fuse Distribution Box" solutions based on existing IPD devices. A small IPD is used to replace the traditional fuse in the electric box, and the fuse characteristics are programmed into the microcontroller. Developers can optimize wiring harnesses and improve reliability through current monitoring. The solution is part of Renesas's "portfolio of successful products." The Renesas Portfolio of Successful Products optimizes and combines compatible Renesas devices for seamless collaboration to reduce user design risk and reduce time-to-market. Renesas now has more than 300 "winning portfolios" based on various products in its product lineup.
