Renesas Electronics introduces new PMIC reference designs for Xilinx FPGas and SOCs

Renesas Electronics, a leading global supplier of semiconductor solutions, announced three easy-to-use power management IC (PMIC) reference designs for powering multiple power rails of Xilinx Artix-7, Spartan-7 series FPGas, and Zynq-7000 SOCs, with optional DDR memory. Renesas works closely with Xilinx to provide low-risk and easy-to-develop power solutions to accelerate FPGA and SoC design. The reference design accelerates power development for a variety of industrial and computing applications, including motor control, machine vision cameras, programmable logic controllers (PLCS), home gateways and appliances, portable medical and wireless devices, and more.

The Renesas Efficient PMIC reference design provides a user-friendly turnkey solution that enables a single design to support different Xilinx speed classes and DDR memory types, including DDR3, DDR3L, DDR4, LPDDR2, and LPDDR3. They are based on the four-phase, three-output ISL91211AIK PMIC and four-output ISL91211BIK PMIC. Both Pmics offer a total output current of up to 20A and feature independent dynamic voltage scaling. Its control loop optimizes the load distribution of Xilinx FPGas and manages the power-on and shutdown timing of the power rail internally, without the need for an external timing controller. Based on a 2MHz switching frequency and fast load transient response, each PMIC board uses 22uF output capacitors and a small inductor to reduce the size of the solution. The new PMIC is available in 4.7mm x 6.3mm, 0.8mm pitch, 35-ball BGA package.

Renesas reference board for Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA

The ISL91211A-BIK-REFZ reference design board for the Artix-7 uses ISL91211AIK and ISL91211BIK multiphase PMIC, ISL800303A synchronous buck DC/DC converter, and ISL21010DFH312 micropower voltage reference. The PMIC provides up to 95% efficiency for multiple power rails and can accept 5V power from a plug-in AC/DC adapter or a DC power supply. The ISL80030 supports 3.3V, 2.5V, and 1.8V VCCO and VCC_IO. The ISL21010DFH312 supports an XADC input voltage of 1.25V with an accuracy of ± 0.2%.

Renesas reference board for Xilinx Spartan-7 FPGA

The ISL91211BIK-REF2Z reference design board for Spartan-7 uses the ISL91211BIK polyphase PMIC and ISL800303A synchronous buck DC/DC converter. The ISL91211BIK powers VCCINT, VCCBRAM, VCC_DDR, VCCAUX and VTT, and can accept 5V power from a plug-in AC/DC adapter or a DC power supply. The ISL80030 DC/DC converter supports 3.3V, 2.5V, and 1.8V VCCO and VCC_IO.

Renesas reference board for Xilinx Zynq-7000 SoC

The ISL91211AIK-REFZ reference design board for Zynq-7000 uses the ISL91211AIK polyphase PMIC, ISL9123 low IQ buck regulator and two ISL80030 3A synchronous buck DC/DC converters. ISL91211AIK powers VCCINT, VCCBRAM, VCC_DDR, and VCCAUX, ISL9123 powers VTT power rails, and two ISL80030 DC/DC converters support 3.3V, 2.5V, and 1.8V power rails for VCCO and VCC_IO.
