Renesas Electronics has introduced a radiation-resistant 16-channel current driver with an integrated 4-bit decoder for reducing the size, weight and power (SWaP) of satellite command and telemetry systems by up to 50%. The ISL72814SEH integrates decoders, input level converters and an array of 16 current drivers in a single monolithic IC. Multiple ISL72814SEH current drivers are capable of sending 750V 28V / 500mA pulses to 1,500 RF switches in a communications satellite payload, routing RF signals to designated Internet radio and TV channels.
The device also sends 12V-30V, 50mA-600mA latching pulses to control relays and solenoids, turn on/off propulsion system thrusters, change orbit altitude, turn on solar panel motors and other functions. Its integrated level converter removes multiple peripheral components, and the internal clamp diode does not require additional protection circuits when driving inductive loads.
The ISL72814SEH uses the SOI process to provide single event effect (SEE) robustness in heavy ion environments, with the driver's integrated decoder directly connected to the general-purpose I/O of the FPGA and microprocessor in the satellite flight computer. Reduced number of pins compared to 1 input to 1 output driver array. Each ISL72814SEH's 16-channel collector open emitter PNP driver output can produce pulses up to 42V and 700mA.
The ISL72814SEH radiation-resistant 16-channel current driver comes in a 28-pin ceramic flat package. Evaluation boards can be used to evaluate device functionality and performance. The device performs wafer acceptance testing with 100krad (Si) at high dose rate (HDR) and 75krad (Si) at low dose rate (LDR) total dose testing. The characterization test was completed without single event latches (SEL), single event flameout (SEB) and single event transients (SET), and linear energy transfer (LET) up to 86MeV * cm2 / mg.
