Renesas Electronics introduces the entry-level MPU RZ/V2L with excellent power efficiency and high precision AI accelerator

     Renesas Electronics has announced the introduction of a new RZ/V2L MPU designed for entry-level AI applications, expanding its RZ/V family of microprocessors (MPUs). As part of the RZ/V family, the new MPU integrates Renesas' unique artificial intelligence (AI) accelerator, DRP-AI (Dynamically Configurable Processor), to make embedded AI systems simpler and more energy efficient. The new RZ/V2L follows many of the features found in the RZ/V series' first product, the RZ/V2M, such as high-precision AI reasoning and excellent energy efficiency, as well as optimized features tailored for entry-level MPUs, such as DRP-AI operating frequency and memory interfaces.

     The DRP-AI provides real-time AI inference and image processing with the necessary color correction and noise reduction to support the camera. Help customers implement AI-based vision applications such as POS terminals, sweeping robots, etc., without the need to configure an external image signal processor (ISP). In addition, the excellent power efficiency of the RZ/V2L eliminates the need for cooling treatments such as adding radiators, cooling fans, etc. Today, AI can be cost-effectively implemented not only in surveillance cameras and industrial equipment, but also in a wide range of applications, including household appliances and consumer electronics.

     RZ/V2L is compatible with existing general-purpose MPU RZ/G2L packages and pins, which makes it easy for RZ/G2L users to upgrade to RZ/G2L for more AI capabilities without modifying system configurations, reducing migration costs.

     As part of the RZ/V2L development environment, Renesas offers a free DRP-AI translation tool that automatically converts AI models into an executable format with an industry-standard Open Neural Network Exchange (ONNX) input format. Developers can use RZ/V2L to evaluate AI models based on validated data while leveraging DRP-AI with conventional tools.
