Renesas Electronics introduces the universal 64-bit MPU RZ/G2 product group, which provides more powerful AI processing capabilities

     Renesas Electronics announced the expansion of its general-purpose 64-bit microprocessor (MPU) RZ/G2 product portfolio to provide enhanced AI processing power for a wide range of applications. The expanded lineup includes three new entry-level MPU models based on the latest Arm® Cortex®-A55 core: RZ/G2L, RZ/G2LC and RZ/G2UL. Together with the existing mid-range and high-end RZ/G2E, RZ/G2N, RZ/G2M and RZ/G2H MPUs, a total of seven RZ/G2 MPUs offer exceptional scalability from entry-level to high-end designs.

     The new RZ/G2L MPU is built on the Cortex-A55 CPU core, which improves processing performance by about 20% compared to previous products using the Cortex-A53 core, and improves basic processing speed by about 6 times in AI applications. In addition, the new MPU integrates a camera input interface, 3D graphics engine, and video codec to provide more cost-effective support for complex functions of human machine interface (HMI) applications such as multimedia processing, GUI rendering, and AI image processing. In addition, the MPU features a Cortex-M33 core that allows real-time processing of tasks such as sensor data acquisition without the need for an external microcontroller (MCU), reducing overall system costs.

"By adding a new entry level product to the RZ/G2, Renesas is accelerating the adoption of the Linux operating system on high-performance MPUs and driving innovation to deliver better performance and enhanced functionality in HMI devices while reducing overall cost."

     Part of the RZ/G family, the new entry-level RZ/G2L features data Error Check and Correction (ECC) protection for on-chip memory and external DDR memory, as well as a proven Linux package (VLP) - industrial grade Linux with a Civil Infrastructure Platform (CIP) Linux kernel. It can achieve more than 10 years of support guarantee and security maintenance, which can significantly reduce future maintenance costs. In addition, support for safety features means that customers can also confidently apply the RZ/G2L MPU product family to industrial applications that require high reliability and extended service life, resulting in faster time-to-market.

     For scenarios where more complex AI capabilities may be required, Renesas plans to enhance the capabilities and performance of the RZ/G2L product group with its proprietary AI accelerator DRP-AI. Renesas will continue to introduce products with better pin compatibility and software reusability to reduce the development burden of customers adding new product versions to their product lines in the future.
