
Renesas Electronics, a leading global supplier of semiconductor solutions, announced that its RL78/G1H based sub-GHz wireless solution has been certified by the WI-SUN Alliance FAN, one of the key communications standards of the Wi-SUN Alliance. The solution complements Renesas' RX651 microcontroller (MCU) and RAA604S00 wireless transceiver discrete solutions, further expanding the company's Wi-SUN FAN certified product portfolio.
New certification solutions include Tessera Technology Inc. The TK-RLG1H + SB2 evaluation board (Note 2) integrates the 16-bit RL78/G1H MCU with Renesas Electronics RF capabilities and the Wi-SUN FAN communication control software stack. This wireless solution enables customers to quickly and easily develop Wi-SUN FAN compliant devices, reducing the time required for certification during the development process by approximately one year.
Toru Moriya, vice president of Renesas Electronics' Emerging Markets business unit, said: "Wireless frequencies in the Sub-GHz band are relatively less susceptible to obstacles such as walls/buildings, which allows data to be transmitted over long distances in urban environments. Wi-SUN FAN is gaining popularity as a wide area wireless network standard that supports MESH networks. "Our certified RL78-based wireless solution will reduce the development burden associated with sensor network applications such as logistics, infrastructure management, and accelerate Wi-SUN FAN's widespread adoption in enabling smart cities and smart grids."
In addition to the newly certified RL78 wireless solution, Renesas also offers high-end discrete solutions that combine a 32-bit RX651 MCU and a RAA604S00 wireless transceiver. The solution has been certified by Wi-SUN FAN in 2019. Users can choose the right Renesas solution based on the required specifications, such as MCU processing performance, memory capacity or power efficiency, to develop products ranging from gateway applications, such as border routers between FAN and WAN, to end applications, such as routers.
By facilitating the implementation of FAN wide area MESH networks, these solutions enable customers to develop new value-added products in a wide range of applications, including smart meter electricity visualization, smart lighting, sensor management in factories or office buildings, and equipment operation monitoring.
