Renesas introduces 80V bidirectional boost and two-phase buck DC/DC controllers

Renesas Electronics announced a pair of innovative 80V DC/DC controllers to provide the additional voltage margin needed to reliably power data center servers, 48V communications and industrial equipment. The ISL81801 boost controller operates like an "on-chip uninterruptible power UPS" with both constant voltage and constant current mode control to regulate two-way current flow (forward or reverse).

This innovative design enables the use of a single controller to charge the battery or supercapacitor and power the load. The ISL81801, combined with the industry's highest 80V up-and-down switching frequency (600kHz) and smallest package (5mmx5mm), enables designers to create ultra-compact, high-density power solutions. The wide input voltage range from 4.5V to 80V is ideal for many common applications, including 48V motor drives, 5G communication base stations, industrial battery backup energy storage systems, and solar power systems.

The ISL81802 is a single-chip 80V two-phase synchronous step-down controller with integrated drivers and is the industry's only 80V two-phase step-down controller with a 1MHz switching frequency that uses small inductors to increase power density. For higher power applications, multiple ISL81802 can be redundantly connected or interleaved with best-in-class transient response. The ISL81802 can produce two independent outputs or one high-current output, giving creative power engineers great flexibility between platforms and IP reuse. In addition, the ability to control both modes of constant voltage or constant current opens up a wide range of end-user applications, such as LED drivers, data centers, and more.
