Renesas Electronics announced the launch of Renesas's high-performance RZ/T2M motor Control Microprocessor Unit (MPU) for applications in AC servo drives and industrial robots. RZ/T2M combines fast, high-precision real-time motor control capabilities and support for the latest industrial Ethernet protocols on a single chip, while enabling functional security operations. By providing all the necessary peripheral functions for motor control, RZ/T2M is able to significantly reduce the number of external components for the user, thereby reducing BOM costs and product size.
"There is a growing demand for factory automation and industrial robot deployment to increase productivity," said Toshihideu Hirai, Vice President of Renesas Electronics Industrial Automation Business. The RZ/T2M can control the servo motor that drives the robot with ultra-high speed and precision. I expect it will contribute to the development of complex industrial robots and broadly promote common security collaboration between machines and humans."
The RZ/T2M is built on two Arm Cortex-R52 cores and operates at a maximum frequency of 800MHz. Connect peripheral functions for motor control to a dedicated bus directly connected to the CPU, allowing the CPU to access these functions with low latency. In addition, the large (576 KB) memory is tightly integrated with the CPU, reducing the execution time jitter that can occur when using the cache, resulting in deterministic fast response processing. These advantages enable RZ/T2M to deliver fast and precise control for applications that require high performance, such as AC servos, drives and industrial robots.
In addition to the main industrial network protocols such as EtherCAT, PROFINET RT and EtherNet/IP, Rexa has added support for the PROFINET IRT protocol in RZ/T2M. The new MPU is also equipped with an Ethernet switch that supports the next generation time sensitive network (TSN) standard, allowing multiple devices to accurately synchronize.
In most cases, building industrial equipment that meets functional safety requirements requires adding two external MCUs for safety monitoring, resulting in an increase in BOM costs. The hardware configuration of RZ/T2M takes functional safety operation into consideration in design, and only one external MCU is required to achieve functional safety. RZ/T2M can perform functional safety operation in parallel with motor control and network communication. In addition, Renesa plans to release functional security solutions later this year, including SIL3 certified software suite combinations. It includes a self-test software suite that enables RZ/T2M to self diagnose faults, and a SIL3 system software suite for mutual diagnosis and software isolation functions. IAR Embedded Workbench for Arm Functional Safety Edition, as an integrated development environment certified for functional safety related development, is an important tool for deploying the above software. It will support new RZ/T2M processors.

Renesas combines the RZ/T2M with its supporting and seamless components to create a "winning portfolio" of motor control systems with industrial networking and functional safety support. These include a high-precision current detection solution that combines RZ/T2M with an isolated ΔΣ modulator, a high-precision rotational position detection solution that combines RZ/T2M with RS-485 devices and optocouplers, a functional security solution that combines RZ/T2M with an MCU for mutual monitoring, and optimized power supply configurations. Renesas now has more than 300 "successful product portfolios" for a variety of applications and end products, based on seamless collaboration, helping users speed up the design process and reduce time to market
