Rugged, lightweight and compact SMT D-SUB connectors for space applications

     C&K, one of the world's most trusted brands of high-reliability connectors, has announced the launch of its space-grade D-Ultra-small Surface Mount Termination (SMT) series of electrical connectors. The new SMT D-Sub connectors conforming to the CS-FR 053 specification are primarily used in aerospace engineering applications, such as the development of communications and networking ports for satellites, spacecraft and launchers.

     Reducing weight and saving PCB (printed circuit board) space are important requirements for connectors in space and avionics applications, ensuring direct implementation and operational reliability. By using SMT, C&K's D-Sub connector eliminates the need to drill a plated through-hole into the PCB and allows one side to be used by other components, resulting in a simpler, lighter design and a smaller overall package.

     This latest series of connectors consists of a single-piece machined aluminium housing, utilizing C&K's in-house technical expertise to achieve a smaller form factor than the traditional six-piece stamped copper housing method. This means that the weight can be reduced by 50% compared to standard through-hole technology (THT) connectors. This construction technique also has better dimensional capabilities.
