With ST's TCPP01-M12 port protection chip, designers can easily upgrade small electronic device cables from old USB Micro-A or Micro-B data cables to the latest Type-C interface cables. The TCPP01-M12 port protection chip meets all electrical protection requirements of USB-C™ connectivity technology.
The TCPP01-M12 is a microcontroller (MCU) companion chip that works with ST's STM32G0 and STM32G4 MCUS '20V/100W USB Type-C Power Delivery transmission controllers. It also provides electrical protection for only 5V interfaces managed by universal MCUS such as STM32 and STM8. Each application scenario requires only TCPP01-M12 and MCU to provide a cost-effective and space-efficient solution.
The TCPP01-M12 has been designed with feedback from mass market customers to simplify the modernization of a wide range of product devices, such as: industrial computers, mobile POS terminal collection devices, medical devices, wearables, wall chargers, automotive infotainment devices, gaming terminals, drones, audio/video systems, gateways, computers and peripherals.
Comprehensive protection features include failure power adapter protection to prevent device damage caused by faulty power supplies using the wrong power parameters. There is also short circuit protection between the VBUS pin and the configuration channel (CC) wire, providing IEC 61000-4-2 Level 4 + 8 kV ESD electrostatic protection for both VBUS and CC pins.
Other advantages of this chip are that if no cable is connected, the TCPP01-M12 will enter a zero-power operating state, thus extending battery life; Use USB PD Programmable Power Supply (PPS) in an innovative way to make devices charge faster. The IC also integrates an external N-channel load switch driver circuit to save bill of material costs. In addition, the use of PPS support and the inherently low on-resistance of N-channel switches minimizes overall heat dissipation compared to commonly used P-channel MOSFETs.
