ST introduces a standalone VBUS power controller for 5V USB-C charging applications

     The STUSB4500L is a new small package in ST's USB-C controller IC product family, designed and certified for 5V powered devices only, and integrates the necessary features required for USB-C connectors to be used as a 5V universal power interface, eliminating the need for designers to learn standards or write code. Develop USB-C charging solutions quickly and easily.

     The STUSB4500L is available in a 4mm x 4mm QFN-24 package or a 2.6mm x 2.6mm CSP-25 chip-level package. USB-C is an alternative technology to the Micro-B or Mini-B interface, which is also suitable for connecting power and transferring data, and its advantage is that it supports front and back plug, and its durability is better, and it can withstand up to 10,000 plugs and unplugs, so it is quickly recognized by the market.

     The new USB-C controller IC from ST is a standalone plug and play interface for low-voltage devices such as Bluetooth speakers, computer accessories, Wi-Fi access points, point-of-sale collection devices, LED lighting and USB switching boards, and can also be used to power devices such as single-board computers and hardware development kits. Running the controller IC eliminates the need to write additional code and requires no external support from the microcontroller, thus saving time-consuming design work and simplifying adoption of the USB-C connector standard.

     The STUSB4500L is automatically powered on through the VBUS cable of the connected power supply, without taking power from the local battery or onboard power supply. Zero leakage current prevents the battery from depleting when not charged. Input overvoltage protection prevents damage to the low-voltage device due to incorrect connection, for example, by mistakenly connecting the 20V power supply of the USB PD AC adapter instead of charging the low-voltage device with the 5V power supply as specified.

     The new controller also has many other features, such as: "No battery" support to ensure that the device is correctly identified by the power supply when the battery is dead; The true cold socket function makes the VBUS switch status default to open until the safe 5V input power supply starts. Power budget recognition and error recovery support ensure correct restart operations when a fault is triggered.
