ST launches STM32 Discovery Suite and extended software to simplify iot node networking and security feature development

To simplify the complex software development challenges faced by iot node developers, ST has introduced the B-L4S5I-IOT01A STM32 Discovery Suite. The new suite includes the standards-certified FreeRTOS™ operating system programming interface, which is fully integrated within the STM32Cube development ecosystem and directly connects to Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Hardware tools include an STM32L4+ microcontroller development board, a variety of MEMS sensors from ST onboard, as well as the STSAFE-A110 security unit, Bluetooth® 4.2 module, Wi-Fi® module, and NFC tags with printed antennas for low-power cloud. Equipped with the X-CUBE-AWS v2.0 STM32Cube Expansion Pack, this development kit can be used as a reference design to simplify and accelerate the development of the final product.

The X-CUBE-AWS v2.0 extension package ensures proper integration of the FreeRTOS standard AWS connectivity framework within the STM32Cube development environment, allowing users to develop node software using only FreeRTOS and STM32Cube without the need for other software. The package also supports AWS native services, including the standard Firmware over-the-Air Update (FOTA) service, which handles microcontrollers' interactions with the STSAFE-A110 security unit, including handling AWS IoT kernel multi-account registration and assigning safety-critical operations during startup, device validation, and OTA firmware validation.

The STM32L4+ board meets the market's performance and power requirements for iot nodes, and the STM32L4S5VIT6 ultra-low power Arm® Cortex-M4 microcontroller integrates 2MB flash memory, 640KB RAM, digital and analog peripherals, and a hardware encryption accelerator. Onboard sensors include the HTS221 capacitive digital relative humidity and temperature sensor, LIS3MDL high-performance 3-axis magnetometer, LSM6DSL 3D accelerometer and 3D gyroscope, LPS22HB digital output absolute pressure barometer, as well as the VL53L0X time-of-flight and gesture detection sensor and two digital omnidirectional microphones.
